Fanakalo is of great assistance to the industry particularly so when training boss boys and new boys of our Native labour force, which consists of many different tribes. It is gradually being extended and improved and is now understood by the majority of mineworkers, both European and Native. Many words, however, are derived from English and Afrikaans terms particularly in connection with the names of tools and implements. The lingua franca now in common use on the mines is called Fanakalo (meaning like this ), which stemmed from a patois developed out of the many languages used by the various tribes working on the mines. These two issues have served a very useful purpose in assisting European and Native mine workers to understand each other to give and receive instructions in carrying out work on the mine and to issue warnings relating to dangerous practices.
